The Carolina Panthers are members of the NFC South Division of the NFC in the NFL. The team’s home field is Bank of America Stadium located in Charlotte, North Carolina. Founded in 1993, Carolina joined the NFL as an expansion team simultaneously with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Former Baltimore Colts player Jerry Richardson voiced his desire to bring an NFL expansion team to the Carolina region. U.S. Senators from North Carolina and South Carolina banded together to lobby in support of the new team.
The team saw early success, as they attained a record of 12-4 in 1996. After a few up-and-down seasons, 2003 saw the team lift their record to 11-5, winning a division title and also acquiring themselves the nickname the Cardiac Cats due to their flair for winning in overtime or by slim margins. That year they went on to take down the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC Championship game and headed to their first Super Bowl appearance against the New England Patriots.
When the Panthers switched to the NFC South, they were saddled with new division rivals the Atlanta Falcons, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and New Orleans Saints. Having won a conference title and a few division championships, the Panthers have yet to secure a coveted Super Bowl title.
