|The Jacksonville Jaguars are one of two teams that the NFL added to the league in 1993, and they began play in 1995. Jacksonville had been hungry for a football team for some time, and the city was already host to the annual Gator Bowl, as well as the Florida vs. Georgia Football Classic. The city tried to entice NFL teams to move there for years, and finally succeeded due to its history of football culture and avid fan base.
Tom Coughlin was the Jaguars’ first coach, from 1995-2002. The Jaguars played their first ever home game in front of a crowd of over 70,000 people. In 1996, the Jaguars second season, they finished with a record of 9-7, giving them their first opportunity to participate in the playoffs. The team won their first two playoff games, defeating the Buffalo Bills and highly ranked Denver Broncos. The Jaguars’ win over the 1996 Broncos is considered one of the biggest upsets in NFL playoff history.
Since the Jags inaugural season, they have racked up a couple of division championships and have made more than a few playoff appearances, though they have yet to bring home a Super Bowl victory. One of the youngest teams in the league, the Jaguars celebrated their 20th season in the NFL in 2014. Over the years they have built strong rivalries with their AFC South counterparts – the Houston Texans, Indianapolis Colts and Tennessee Titans.
The Jaguars play home games at Everbank Field in Jacksonville, Florida, and are the only professional sports team to play in the city. Originally called Jacksonville Municipal Stadium, Everbank Field is also home of the Taxslayer Bowl (formerly known as the Gator Bowl.) In 2013, $63 million worth of renovations to Everbank was approved to add new end zone videoboards and spas, along with more food and beverage options.
