The Kansas City Chiefs, a member of the AFC West Division, were founded in 1960. They were originally known as the Dallas Texans and shared the Cotton Bowl for three seasons with city rivals the Dallas Cowboys. Following the 1963 move from Dallas to Kansas City, the franchise changed its name to the Chiefs and quickly morphed into one of the strongest in the AFL, sending demand for Kansas City Chiefs tickets sky high. In 1969, the Chiefs took home the Lombardi Trophy after a Super Bowl IV victory over Minnesota in the last game before the AFL merger with the NFL. Since 1972 the franchise has played home games at Arrowhead Stadium.
The Chiefs would not head back to the playoffs again until the late 1980s and by the 1990s became a perennial power, clinching seven playoff berths. A renewed team spirit refreshed division rivalries with the Denver Broncos, Oakland Raiders and San Diego Chargers. In addition to all AFC West opponents, the Chiefs welcome the Atlanta Falcons, Baltimore Ravens, Cincinnati Bengals, Carolina Panthers and Indianapolis Colts to Arrowhead Stadium in 2012.
Baltimore, the 2011 AFC Championship runner-up, returns to Arrowhead for the first time since the 2006 season, and Cincinnati visits Kansas City for the first time since 2007 after coming off a successful 2011 season qualifying for the playoffs. Atlanta, another 2011 playoff contender, and Carolina return to Kansas City for the first time since 2004. The Chiefs wrap up their home schedule playing Indianapolis for the third-consecutive season but first at home after two trips to Lucas Oil Stadium. |
