The Oakland Raiders are members of the AFC West. Established in 1960, the Raiders' home field is O.co Coliseum in Oakland, California. Beginning in 1963, the team started down the path of what would become decades of successes for the West Coast NFL franchise.
The Raiders have amassed a number of titles, achieving a level of success that very few teams can claim. Starting with them sweeping the AFL Championship in 1967, the team holds several division titles and multiple Super Bowl triumphs to their name. Even their 1982 relocation to Los Angeles couldn’t stymie the team's momentum. In the world of professional sports the more successful a team the more rivals they are apt to have, the Oakland Raiders being no exception. The Raiders go head-to-head down division lines with the Denver Broncos, Kansas City Chiefs and San Diego Chargers. Often called the “Battle of the Bay,” the Raiders find themselves in opposition with their geographic rival the San Francisco 49ers. The contention stems from a 1967 exhibition match pitting the AFL against the NFL team in which San Francisco took home the win for the NFL. The majority of the Raiders' historical rivalries reach back to their AFL roots and can be seen in the tensions held with the New England Patriots, New York Jets and the Pittsburgh Steelers. |
