|The San Francisco 49ers are part of the NFC West. The team claimed home turf at Candlestick Park in San Francisco up until the 2014-15 season. The 49ers now play home games at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California. At Levi’s Stadium the 49ers will assuredly see a new chapter in their historic franchise.
Founded in 1946 as part of the AAFC, the Niners joined the NFL when the AAFC folded in 1950. The team’s name comes from the legendary California Gold Rush and the forty-niners nickname that was given to the gold prospectors. While the 49ers paved the way as the first professional sports franchise based on the West Coast, they only made it to second place in the league during their first few years as the Cleveland Browns dominated most of the conference.
It wasn’t until 1957 that the 49ers would enjoy their first triumphs as NFL members, ending the season with an 8-4 record tying with the Detroit Lions for the Western Division title. In this era, the 49ers had a “Million Dollar Backfield,” which included four future Hall of Famers. In the 1960s, the 49ers were the first team to use the shotgun formation.
The team brought home its first Super Bowl title in 1981. That season, the 49ers faced off against the then-dominant Dallas Cowboys for the NFC championship, winning the game in a closing drive that is considered one of the most memorable in NFL history. During this drive, Joe Montana threw a pass to Dwight Clark in what has become known as “The Catch.” In the 1984 season, the 49ers would covet another Super Bowl title.
The team went on to win several division and conference championships. The San Francisco 49ers have made numerous playoff appearances and were the first team to win five Super Bowls. The 49ers enjoy a diverse ensemble of rivalries starting with the the Dallas Cowboys, then moving on to the cross-town contention with the Oakland Raiders and finishing up with divisional foes of St. Louis Rams, Seattle Seahawks and Arizona Cardinals. Notable former San Francisco 49ers players include Joe Montana, Jerry Rice and Steve Young.
