The San Francisco 49ers are part of the NFC West. The team's home turf is Candlestick Park located in San Francisco, California. Founded in 1946 as part of the AAFC, the Niners joined the NFL when the AAFC folded in 1950. The team's name comes from the legendary California Gold Rush and the forty-niners nickname that was given to the gold prospectors. While the 49ers paved the way as the first professional sports franchise based on the West Coast, they only made it to second place in the league during their first few years as the Cleveland Browns dominated most of the conference. It wasn't until 1957 that the 49ers would enjoy their first triumphs as NFL members, ending the season with an 8-4 record tying with the Detroit Lions for the Western Division title.
The team brought home its first Super Bowl title. Owners of several division and conference championship wins, the San Francisco 49ers have made numerous playoff appearances and were the first team to win five Super Bowls. The 49ers enjoy a diverse ensemble of rivalries starting with the once bitter historical opposition against the Dallas Cowboys, then moving on to the cross-town contention with the Oakland Raiders and finishing up with divisional foes of St. Louis Rams, Seattle Seahawks and Arizona Cardinals. |
