|The Tennessee Titans, anchored in Nashville, entered the league in 1960. At the time the team was located in Houston. The Oilers, as they were known, won consecutive AFL championships in 1960 and 1961. They won the AFL Eastern Division title in 1967. The Oilers were the first professional football team to play in a domed stadium. When the AFL and NFL merged, the Oilers were moved to the AFC Central division. The Oilers struggled for the better part of two decades, but won a division title in 1991. The team moved to Tennessee in 1997.
The team was known as the Houston Oilers and Tennessee Oilers before adopting the Titans moniker in 1999. The Titans retained the Oilers team records to make their history cohesive. The Titans became regular playoff contenders and made a run at Super Bowl XXXIV, coming up one yard short from tying the St. Louis Rams on the last play of the game. Current members of the AFC South, the team has enjoyed many league and division championship titles prior to the 1970 merger between the NFL and the AFL.
While the Tennessee Titans have made numerous playoff appearances, they have yet to sink their teeth into the coveted Super Bowl title. In the footsteps of all professional football teams, the Titans have rivals in their division with the Houston Texans, Indianapolis Colts and Jacksonville Jaguars. Notable former Titans players include Frank Wycheck, Steve McNair and Eddie George.
The Titans played at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium in 1997, and then spent two seasons playing at Vanderbilt Stadium. Since 1999 the Titans have found a more permanent home at LP Field. With a seating capacity of nearly 70,000, LP is the best place to see the Tennessee Titans play.
