The Kansas City Chiefs are currently part of the AFC West Division. Founded in 1960, the team was initially titled the Dallas Texans and shared the Cotton Bowl with city rivals the Dallas Cowboys for three seasons. Following the 1963 move from Dallas to Kansas City, the Chiefs morphed into one of the strongest in the AFL, sending demand for Kansas City Chiefs tickets sky high. Then in 1969 the Chiefs took home the glory of the Super Bowl title in the last game before the AFL merger with the NFL. Since 1972 the franchise has played home games at Arrowhead Stadium, a location that is also a popular destination for many of the Big 12 college football games.
The Chiefs would not head back to the playoffs again until the late 1980s, and by the 1990s became a perennial power, clinching seven playoff berths. A renewed team spirit lent itself to refreshed division rivalries with the Denver Broncos, Oakland Raiders and San Diego Chargers. Though they have brought home several division championship wins and made several playoff showings, the Chiefs have yet to clinch a coveted Super Bowl title post-NFL merger. |
