Members of the NFC South Division of the NFL, the Atlanta Falcons play their homes games at Georgia Dome located in Atlanta proper. Founded in 1965, the Falcons began their professional football career as expansion team after the city was asked to make a choice between joining the AFL or the NFL. The Falcons officially commenced play in 1966. While the team was able to sweep up many top-notch players in several of their first drafts, they did not post their first winning record until 1971, a season highlighted by a 28–21 win over the Green Bay Packers in their first nationally televised game.
A nine game winning streak in 1980 furnished the team with a then current best record of 12–4, seeing them bring home their first division title. Subsequent decades saw the Falcons track a series of ups and downs, never quite able to seize their glory. Drafting players like Deion Sanders garnered the team temporary lifts and helped them acquire a few conference, division and Playoff appearances, though it has yet to assist the Atlanta Falcons in their quest for a coveted Super Bowl title. The team continues to pushes forward against division rivals Carolina Panthers Tampa Bay Buccaneers and New Orleans Saints. |
