|The Indianapolis Colts became an official NFL team in 1953 when, based out of Maryland, they were known as the Baltimore Colts. In 1984 the team relocated to Indiana. The team struggled during their first decade in Indiana, but the Colts won the AFC East in 1987, boasting a 9-6 winning season. The Colts made back-to-back playoff appearances in 1995 and 1996.
Quarterback Peyton Manning was drafted in 1998 and went on to lead the Colts for 13 seasons. During this time, the Colts and Patriots began an intense rivalry, specifically between Manning and Patriots quarterback Tom Brady. In 2006, the Colts had a winning season and triumphed against the Chicago Bears in Super Bowl XLI. This was the first Super Bowl win for the team since moving to Indianapolis. The Colts made another Super Bowl appearance in 2009, but lost to the New Orleans Saints.
A current member of the AFC South, the team has won numerous division, conference and league championships, including two Super Bowl Championship titles, from the time of their inception. Since their relocation to the Midwest, the Colts have accumulated an intensely devoted fan base and more than a few equally fierce contentions. Historical rivalries for the franchise date back to the 1950s and include the New York Giants and Miami Dolphins. A recent addition to the Colts’ rivalries include hearty East Coast competitor the New England Patriots.
Prominent former Colts team members include Peyton Manning, Marshall Faulk, Edgerrin James, Marvin Harrison and Jim Harbaugh.
